Muscovy Duck Gift Ideas

In honor of the poultry show a few of my Muscovy ducks were entered in this past weekend I thought I would share some lovely Muscovy gift ideas today. I know there are other Muscovy duck loving people out there. Give them a gift with a Muscovy duck on it.

I hope you enjoy these wonderful Muscovy duck items. Muscovy ducks are the best ducks in my opinion. It was fun entering them in the show and then having 3 of them win their class. The other one also did well with a 3rd place finish. I plan to show my Muscovy ducks again next fall.

Sky with her first set of ducklings and a gosling earlier this year above.

We have 16 new ducklings! :) Sky came out from where her nest was at the other day with 16 ducklings. I took some photos but I don't have them off the camera and on the computer yet.

Well. I better get busy and get stuff ready for the swap meet on Sunday. It is one of the last ones for the season. My fingers are crossed I sale all the books I have for sale so I don't have to haul them around any more and hopefully some other stuff will sale as well. This one is a fun one to go to as there are always a lot of critters to see as well. It's where I have gotten most of my photos of the large pet birds such as the Macaw photo below and some still life vintage photos also.

R.I.P Serena and New Ducklings

We lost our dear girl, Serena yesterday. It was so strange last night going to bed and not having her there to say goodnight to and then waking up this morning without her. She was an amazing dog. She would have loved to see the new ducklings that came hatched out yesterday. She loved all animals but esp. the babies.

Here are a few of my fave photos I have of Serena.

Ok, no more. I am starting to tear up again. I'll always have the good memories of her.

On a much happier note. We had a dozen ducklings hatch yesterday. These are Apple's. Apple is my duck I got as a fertile egg from New York that I put in the incubator and hatched. Sky Jr. should of had ducklings also. She was sitting on a nest but I think the eggs weren't any good. She is helping Apple with her ducklings now.

Muscovy Ducks

I love my Muscovy ducks. They are the best. I enjoy taking photos of them also. Apple is the Muscovy that traveled the longest distance to get to me. She came to me as a fertile egg all the way from New York that I placed in the incubator and she hatched out. Muscovy are excellent at pest control. They love to eat flies and other creepy crawly bugs.

This is Apple just after a swim session as she was flapping her wings dry.

This is Sky with her ducklings plus a duckling and a gosling she adopted. They are growing up so fast. They are now just over a month old and I need to get some new photos of them. The gosling is now much bigger than Sky but she is still taking care of it just like it was one of her own.

Beauty was one of my faves. I miss her. She passed away of old age. She was an old hen when I got her but she did raise one family before I lost her. I have her 2 daughters to remember her by.

Here is another of Apple.

And by now you are probably thinking enough! I love my Scovies. Maybe I will take some more photos of them later today but now I have to go get ready for the Farmer's market tonight.

The Little Muscovy Family

Sky and her ducklings and gosling were out and about yesterday. They are so fun to watch. One of the ducklings is not hers but an adopted barnyard mix duckling. She doesn't seem to notice. She also adopted the lone gosling we have. I wonder if she thinks it is just a duckling on growth hormones? Or if she knows that it is a gosling. Anyways... they are so cute as they travel around the farm stopping for a swim or finding a bite to eat. This morning Sky was showing them a great place to find flies. I love the Muscovys as they are excellent at fly control and now she will also be teaching the little gosling as well. Sometimes you will hear a little knocking sound and wonder what is that? And then you will realize it is just the Muscovies getting the flies off the side of the house. Muscovy ducks are the best!

Thunder is Growing Fast

Thunder is growing so fast. He loves to bounce and run around the pasture. He is so friendly. I took some photos of him at a week old. I can't believe tomorrow he will be two weeks old. Time sure does fly. I'll probably take some more photos of him later today. And of course I will take photos of some flowers, chickens, and whatever else also while I have the camera out.

Apple has just gone broody, which means she is sitting on eggs to hatch, so hopefully with luck next month I will have some little ducklings running around. I'm so glad they didn't pass that stupid law that would have made Muscovy ducks illegal to own except with a federal permit.

I think the neighbor lady thought I must be crazy when I was laying down in the grass in the pasture taking photos. She kept staring over at me. I was taking photos of the wildflowers and pretty weeds.

Keep Muscovy Legal

As of 3/31/2010 it might be illegal to own, breed, show, keep for egg laying, or have as pets Muscovy ducks. Here is a petition to try and save them. Here is where they are talking about it on BYC. Here is the FWS page with the "final rule. We need to get this rule changed before it goes into effect. I love my Muscovy ducks and they are an important part of the farm. Many people have Muscovy ducks. In some places they are the only duck allowed to be kept as pets because they are not loud like other ducks. Muscovy ducks are excellent at insect control. I love my Muscovy ducks and do not want to have to give them up. There are a lot of people that love their Scovies.

I agree with this print. The Muscovy is the king of ducks. I love how they have so much personality, eat so many insects, lay wonderful eggs, and make excellent mothers. I had a huge insect problem here living so near hog farms but once I got my Muscovy ducks there were a lot less insects. They don't quack like regular ducks and make a ton of noise. They are better at foraging than other breeds of ducks and better able to utilize grass pasture. Yes, we still feed them duck feed but they don't need as much as other breeds of ducks need.

And here are some other Muscovy products I found on a Zazzle search. I love these ducks.

I won't be able to have any more scenes like this at the farm anymore. Unless I jump through hoops and get state and federal permits. It will be illegal for my ducks to reproduce. It will be illegal to have them as pets, as egg layers, or anything else. The ones I already have will be grandfathered in but should something ever happen before my ducks passed away of old age (such as having to move somewhere ducks are not allowed) and I am unable to keep them I legally would not be able to give them to anyone else even for free. Duck rescue centers will no longer be able to take in Muscovy ducks after 3/31/2010 if we don't get this changed. People will no longer be able to have them as pets, show animals, or anything else.
